Book Review: Fat Chicks Rule! How to Survive in a Thin-Centric World by Lara Frater
Reviewed by ElegantPlus.com
I first “met” the author of Fat Chicks Rule, Lara Frater when she was writing this resource guide for living large. We both belong to the useful and friendly plus fashion discussion list Don’t Tell Me What Size I Must B and I knew then, based on her questions and contributions to discussions, that this would be a well researched book. And it is.
She combines fun facts like fat women in history with useful knowledge like how to buy a car that suits your size. Sections on snappy come-backs to well meaning, and not so well meaning, weight related comments feels empowering. Probably the most important chapters deal with obesity myths and weight loss industry, dieting scams and the thin obsessed culture in which we all live.
The clothing shopping sections are more practical than fashion oriented - more a listing of who and who does not carry larger size clothing, with very little discussion of the styles each shop carries. Problematic for any publication in the print medium is the rate at which plus size fashion is changing. Stores are coming and going so quickly from the “size positive” list that the simple lag time between final proofing of gallies and actual publication can mean information is out of date. For example, Frater lists H&M as a plus size clothing resource, and H&M announced the discontinuation of their plus line at about the same time the book was released. Fashion is a realm where on-line information resources can better keep up with rapid development and changes.
Minor fashion caveat aside, this is a very handy and useful resource. Much of the content will stand the test of time. To have such an accessible and digestible guide, complete with easily understood explanations of the science and statistics to back up size positive rhetoric, can only be considered a great public service.
