Plus-size Swimwear Figure and Fit Guide
brought to you by ElegantPlus.com

Along with the rest of plus-size clothing styles, the choices in bathing suits have come a long ways in the last few years. Gone are the days of the old-lady swim dress with industrial molded interior bras that even our grandmothers weren’t too happy about wearing. Now pretty patterns and prints, bold colors, flirty skirts, Hollywood halters, plunging neck-lines and trendy tankinis are all within the curvaceous, full-figured woman’s grasp. Complementing pareos and sarongs, filmy cover-ups and sassy beachwear are also becoming easier to find in plus-sizes, so if you’ve got it - flaunt it! Don’t hide in shapeless, billowing shapes safely under your beach umbrella. Get out and live! Swim, play beach volleyball, scuba dive, and sail! Relax on the beach or by the pool. Enjoy a cruise to exotic locales. ‘Cause you’ve got the style, the look and the attitude that no waif can match! In fact, have you ever noticed that those sporting the waif look have trouble filling out their swimsuits? So make the most of those gorgeous curves! But always remember the sunscreen.

Once you’ve figured out your body shape and type,  be sure to check out the ElegantPlus.com Editor’s Pick Plus-size Bathing Suits and Full-figured Swimwear Directory.

What’s Your Body Type?
Plus-size women come in all different shapes.
Maximize your assets through color, cut and pattern.

A Shaped (also frequently known as Triangle or Pear Shaped) - Your figure is visually narrower above your waist and wider below,  so your hips and thighs are probably full. The majority of women have  this shape. Since your shoulders are narrower than your hips, look  for silhouettes that broaden your shoulders and add height visually. This can be done with a V or low square cut  top which both broadens your

Flatter an A-Shape

 bust-line and draws the eye upward to your best assets.  Halter styling looks great on this figure type. Color blocking can be used to create the same trick. Choose a suit with bold, bright horizontal stripes across the bust area, or an ombre pattern that gradually gets darker toward the bottom of the suit. Take care with skirted suits. If a skirt is too full it can look too bulky. If the hem finishes at the widest part of the hip, it can make you look wider. Often an empire waisted skirt suit works the best on this figure, gradually flaring outward and de-emphasizing the difference between hip and waist ratios while playing up the bust line. Other bust enhancing features like a shirred or twisted bust, embroidered detailing or bright patterned color splash draws the eye upward to your best features. Higher cut leg openings will lengthen and elongate your leg.

V Shaped (Also frequently referred to as O, Circle or Apple Shaped) - Your figure is visually larger or wider above the waist  and narrower around your hips and thighs. This is a common figure type for Plus-size women. Since your shoulders  are broader than your hips, look for silhouettes that help bring  your body into balance by subtly increasing the fullness of your  lower body. Defining the waist is also a good strategy. Skirted and boy-cut swimwear are particularly well

Flatter a V-Shape

suited for this figure type since they broaden the lower body and balance a fuller upper body. Vertical striping elongates the torso, while making the lower non-covered part of your body appear fuller. Suits that create the illusion of a defined  waist through strategic, angled or curved  patterning and color use will also give you a balanced pin-up figure, emphasizing your curvaceous bust-line while suggesting a curvy waist-hip ratio. Many suits that work to create curves for an I shaped figure also work well for this figure type.

X Shaped (Also frequently referred to as Hour Glass) - Your waist is noticeably smaller than either your bust or hips  and visually divides your figure. If you’re tall, waist-defining looks can help balance your height; if you’re short, you may wish  to de-emphasize the small waist that creates a horizontal line  between your upper and lower dimensions. Almost any bathing suit looks great on this figure type, but particularly attractive are sleek monochromatic suits in bold or classic

Flatter a X-Shape

colors. Large, splashy patterns look best on taller figures while smaller pattern look best on shorter figures. Sometimes an hour glass plus figure may feel a little too lush and curvaceous in a swimsuit.  Strategically use horizontal bands of color and pattern or the tankini cut to create a less defined waist-hip ration and even out your curves. A higher cut leg opening will add the illusion of height to shorted figure by visually elongating the leg, a strategy that will help shorter X shapes revel in the glory of all their curves.

I Shaped (Also frequently referred to as Ruler, Rectangular or Boyish Figure) - Your waist is somewhat undefined and similar to your upper and lower  dimensions. Emphasizing features other than your waistline will  create more of an hourglass shape and thus more balance between  top and bottom. A good approach is to look for styles that divide and define your figure. Use angled and curved patterns or the tankini cut to define your waist and create curves.
Plunging necklines, bold or splashy patterns and full skirts are also

Flatter an I-Shape

good strategies - examples can be found in many of the other style categories. Stay away from vertical striping, or horizontal striping through the mid-torso area, since this will emphasize the boyishness of your figure type. Shirred or wrap styling creates the illusion of a more dramatic, curvy waist-hip ratio.

Plus-Size Pregnancy Is a Positive Experience

Plus-Size Pregnancy Is a Positive Experience

by Brette Sember for Elegant Plus Magazine

Pregnancy is one of the most special times in a woman’s life, yet to read some of the reports in the media, you would think that being plus-sized and pregnant is dangerous, unhealthy, and risky. Contrary to what is often reported, it is absolutely possible to be plus-sized, have a healthy pregnancy, and feel good about yourself.

 Find a health care provider you trust who treats you with respect. Many plus-size women relate stories of doctors and nurses who treated them like second-class citizens. It is essential that you find a health care provider (doctor or midwife) who is size-friendly and does not categorize you as high risk or subject you to unnecessary tests just because of your size. Your health care provider should be someone with whom you can talk openly and trust completely. Make sure you’re comfortable not only with the doctor or midwife, but with the office staff as well. A nurse who makes you miserable during weigh-ins can turn a prenatal visit into something you dread.

Listen to what your trusted health care provider recommends. Plus-size women are usually encouraged to gain slightly less weight during pregnancy than other women. Listening to this recommendation can greatly reduce the chance of problems during pregnancy. Most physicians agree that plus-size women need to gain weight during pregnancy, so anyone who tells you to lose weight or not gain at all is misinformed. Discuss any prenatal tests with your health care provider and understand exactly what your risks are. Plus-size moms do have higher rates of some problems, but with good medical care, a healthy pregnancy and absolutely perfect baby are definitely the norm.

Find maternity clothes that make you feel good about yourself.  Plus-size maternity clothes do exist! Many plus-size moms feel discouraged by the lack of attractive and modern maternity clothes in their size. Some moms opt to wear larger regular clothes (and chafe at the suggestion that they should just wear their husband’s clothes – which may not fit), but doing so can add to “invisible pregnancy syndrome”, where you’re pregnant, but no one can tell and they just assume you’re fat and frumpy. Dressing in clothes that emphasize your pregnant belly tells the world your joyful news and helps you feel proud of the wonderful baby growing inside you. More and more designers and stores are waking up to the need for attractive plus-size maternity clothes.

Love your body. Your body is performing a miracle right now. Lots of plus-size women hate their bodies or resent them. This is the one time in your life where you absolutely cannot diet and have no choice but to embrace your changing shape. You’ve got to step up and tell yourself, “This is who I am and I am beautiful.” Love your body as you love your baby. Plus-size pregnant women are gorgeous and shapely and their bodies deserve just as much admiration and respect as other pregnant bodies. Adopting a positive mentality about the important work your body is doing will go a long way to helping you feel good about yourself.

Take time to enjoy your pregnancy.  Pregnancy is a fleeting time – as long as those nine months seem right now, they will go by in the blink of an eye. Keep a pregnancy journal and make time to just sit and feel the baby move. Be sure to take some photos. Lots of plus-size pregnant moms are hesitant to get in front of a camera, but when it’s over, you’ll wish you had photos to show your child. Some moms enjoy going for additional (non-medical) ultrasounds at malls or using a home Doppler to listen to their baby’s heartbeat at home. Staying focused on your pregnancy will remind of the joyful reason for all you’re going through.

Get support. It’s easy to feel as if you are alone when you’re pregnant and plus-sized. All of the pregnancy magazines are filled with photos of stick women with basketballs attached to their bellies. Join an online support group for plus-sized moms and find out that you truly are not alone (find them at BabyCenter.com, FertilityPlus.org, and YourPlusSizePregnancy.com). Talk to women in your family who have similar body shapes – they’ve been there and can offer support and advice. Open up about how you feel to your partner, who loves your body and can help reassure you that you are a gorgeous woman. Keeping it all inside will only make you feel worse. Lean on others and let them help you feel good about yourself.

Monif C. Plus Sizes Announces the Grand Opening of their New York Plus-Size Boutique

Guest Contributor, Elegant Plus Magazine

MonifC

NEW YORK, NY - June 1, 2007, Monif C. changes the way New York plus size fashionistas shop with Manhattan’s first contemporary clothing boutique catering to curvy, confident, and stylish plus size women.  Thursday June 14, 2007 marks the Grand Opening of the Monif C. Plus Sizes Boutique in Midtown Manhattan.  Monif C. Plus Sizes is a contemporary,
designer clothing line that was launched in September 2005.   Co-owned by mother/daughter team, Monif and Elaine Clarke, Monif C. was conceived to reaffirm every woman’s desire for an inspired life, luxury, and unadulterated sex appeal.

Known for her debut during Olympus Fashion Week Fall 2005, and features on The View, BET’s Rip The Runway, the Tyra Banks Show, and TLC’s What Not To Wear, among others, Monif C. is bringing fashion to plus size
consumers who would otherwise have no outlet to get their contemporary fashion fix.  Monif’s line of sexy, stylish dresses for plus size women can be purchased online, in specialty boutiques worldwide, and now live and in full color at the Monif C. Plus Sizes New York Boutique.

Monif Clarke created Monif C. as a result of her own frustrations with the fashion industry’s view of the plus-size market. “There is a new perspective amongst plus size women that says, “I can be sophisticated, sexy, and I want to show off my curves. I wanted to create plus sized clothing that even “skinny” women would want to buy. ” Who says plus sizes
can’t be sexy, luxurious, and feminine?

After successfully creating the Curvy Girls Night Out, a New York City one-day shopping and pampering event held twice a year, Monif C. would get calls from many customers pleading for the opportunity to shop Monif C. year round in New York City.  As a plus size woman herself, Monif understood the frustration of shopping in the New York City area.  “I
always wondered why in one of the fashion capitals in the world I could never find stylish plus size clothing.  I am my customer, and I know that we are stylish, fashion-forward women that are on the go.  We want to be able to come in, and buy a dress to wear to a special event later that evening.  We wanted to provide women in the tri-state area and
visiting tourists the convenience of shopping the Monif C. line.”

At the Monif C. Plus Sizes Boutique, customers will be able to shop the entire Monif C. line as well as jewelry, large size shoes, body-shaping undergarments, and accessories hand-picked by Monif C. herself.  Gold drapery, beaded Indian silks, and a white crystal chandelier highlight the décor of the boutique and complement the vibrant colors and
opulence of the Monif C. line.  Curvy women will be delighted to shop in a chic, upscale boutique where they can shop for beautiful clothing made specifically for them.

Jordin Sparks: Plus-Size Idol

ELEGANT PLUS CONTENT TAGS:

Towards the end of the latest round of American Idol, it became obvious that a curvy woman was a likely winner.  After Mandisa,  a visibly plus-sized woman, was so ridiculed by Simon last year in spite of her powerful talent, it was refreshing to see the very same Simon champion the fuller figured Melinda Doolittle and kiss the voluptuously proportioned Lakisha Jones.  But in the end it was  seventeen year old  Jordin Sparks, that took the day.

A tall, size 14 bodaceous beauty, Sparks has recently come under fire by the National Action Against Obesity as too fat and a poor role model for children and teens.  (See video below.)

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svxLdNsxPSw]

But of all the full-figured contestants to make a splash over the years including the likes of Frenchie Davis, thrown off for posing topless in college who then went on to sing in the Broadway smash hit Rent and Jennifer Hudson who went on to star in the on-screen hit, Dreamgirls and win an Oscar,  Jordin is probably the least plus-sized and most photogenic of the lot during their American Idol stints.   At her height, her curves and size look better than the average woman (hence the former modeling gig with trendy plus-size retailer, Torrid) and as Ellen DeGeneres rightly observed, she looks “healthy” for a celebrity change.  (See video interview below).

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQuAEUJ_JU8]

While childhood obesity and diseases like Type 2 diabetes may be on the rise due to unhealthy and sedentary lifestyles throughout the USA, it is precisely the extremist views of the  National Action Against Obesity and others like them that are fueling an equally rising health problem in teen and young adults - eating disorders and obsession with appearance. (See the NEDA video below.)

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESQlryualZ4]

Jordin is young, vibrant, curvaceous, and yes *healthy*.  We need more role models of her ilk, not fewer.  In fact, her win illustrates but a small step in the thin-obsessed, size 0 celebrity pop world that serves as role models most of the time.  Who do you think parents would prefer their young daughters to look to?  Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie….. or the more wholesome, all-American Jordin Sparks?  I know whom I would prefer.  Furthermore, this step toward broader size and looks acceptance is really quite small.  When the set of pipes and singing power of an American Idol contestant are the sole criteria on which the public makes its final judgement, then true acceptance will have been achieved.  But, even with a little extra “meat on her bones”, there is no doubt Jordin is a looker  - the public still looks for the shiny package in making their final judgement and isn’t ready for figures like those of Mandisa, Frenchie and LaKisha.

 But there is hope, with the rise of such edgy rockers as Beth Ditto of the band Gossip willing to pose a la nude in all her apple shaped, 5′ 2″  glory on a magazine cover complete with all her fat rolls on display. Such a brash move is winning praise from more feminist viewpoints while Ditto is quoted ranting against the size 0 fashion world.  It’s possible times are starting to change.  And in direct opposition to the nonsense being spouted in certain quarters, we think talent no matter what size body it resides in should be rewarded and celebrated.

Congratulations Jordin. Well done!  Please resist the pressure and keep healthy and curvy, we beg you.
